Handspring has announced that it is moving to convergence devices, like the Treo, to its stockholders. PDA buzz's forum goes on about this at length in the thread "Handspring Tries to Stop the Bleeding."

Palm has announced the finalization of the split of its Palm OS subsidiary (software) from its Palm handheld subsidiary (hardware.) This seems to mean well for the company and users as evidenced by the articles, like this one from Wired entitled "Palm-ists Like the Company Split."

Also, the LIBRARY-PDAS@LISTSERV.ARIZONA.EDU list is a really good source of information on what people are investigating.

Hi Robin. Are you a member of pdalibraries yahoo user group? I do not know that many
public libraries are using pdas right now; however, the possibilities and applications are out there
and more development is necessary. I am of the strong opinion that pdas are the solution to the ebook wars.
There have been very few successful ebook reading devices on the market. Ebooks in general do not
seem to be doing well, yet palm has increased the number of ebooks it is selling. I have recently been
involved in an ebook project. You can see the final report at <a href="http://www.geocities.com/lbell927/index.htm
We used the franklin ebook reader and the RCA REB 1100. The RCA is a very good solid reading
device but with no pda functionality. The Franklin tried to incorporate some pda functionality into it, but was not
a very solid device. The college students using the device really liked the pda functionality, and that is one
of the reasons I think that pdas will become the standard platform for e-books. I think there is a lot of opportunity and need
for librarians to discover their role in the world of pdas. The other fields where they seem to be used heavily are
in the medical arena where there are tons of content and applications and the field of law. I too, wonder, what
the public library applications will be, but perhaps some others could answer to that. Hope this helps. So far I have read a lot about PDAs, seen all the reviews, tech articles etc, but I've never used one and have no idea what their potential really is. I'm also curious about messages I've seen on some listservs about PDAs being a potential solution to the platform wars for e-books. I guess I would really like someone to tell me the reason why I absolutely positively need to go and buy a PDA right away.

_________________________________________________________
Robin Boulton rboulton@linc.lib.il.us
Automation Coordinator (630) 584 0076 x 258
St. Charles Public Library District Cell: (630) 918 8738
St. Charles, IL 60174 FAX: (630) 584 3448
http://www.st-charles.lib.il.us
_________________________________________________________

This discussion is for pdas, ideas, and applications, and the implications for use in libraries.
